Local Lifestyle

When one imagines summer on Cape Cod, Barnstable is usually what comes to mind. Locals enjoy close proximity to Cape Cod Getaway Airport, easy access to the Hyannis-Nantucket Ferry, lengthy stretches of sandy shores, and an authentic old-timey feel not often found in modern summertime destinations. When not offshore, days are enjoyed teeing off at one of the community’s several golf courses. Unlike many other New England summertime hotspots, this diverse collection of villages enjoys year-round events, celebrations, recreational activities, and diverse, seasonal menus at its many dining establishments.

Dining, Entertainment & Shopping

The West End is a stylishly designed eatery known for its craft cocktails, seasonal selections, and weekend brunch. Braised short rib, clam chowder, and New England oysters are some of their more popular, savory offerings, which locals have called “fabulous,” “delicious,” and “a hit.”

An upscale experience awaits at The Naked Oyster. This red brick-clad dining room serves as the perfectly snazzy backdrop for guests to enjoy seafood towers, caviar-topped oysters, and the finest beef on the Cape. Here, all oysters are harvested from a nearby bay, the kitchen is overseen by a genius with over three decades of experience, and guests come from all over to sample the dishes they have read so much about in The Boston Globe and other large regional publications.

Pain D’Avignon is a modern take on the French bistro situated across the street from the airport. Since 1992, Pain D’Avignon has featured one of the largest wine offerings on the Cape, a daily bread and pastry delivery service, and the highest quality ingredients available, making its incredible reputation a given.

Things to Do

The kick-off to summer takes place with the Figawi Regatta - a sailboat race from Hyannis to Nantucket on Memorial Day Weekend. The first major sail of the season in New England is also a charitable event benefiting local youth. Osterville Village Day is another highly anticipated event in mid-July. This exciting day consists of a parade, car show, live music, children’s activities, and food - all the makings of a quintessential summertime gathering. Throughout the rest of the season, live music is enjoyed at the Cape Cod Melody Tent, a covered outdoor facility. The only still-operating tent facility in the nation has brought in big names with past performers, including ZZ Top and The Beach Boys.

Schools

One of Cape Cod’s more bustling communities also offers a wide array of educational options across every level. A few examples include:

  • St. John Paul II School, 5-12; a private Catholic school with 91% of graduates going on to attend a four-year university

Sturgis Charter Public School, 9-12; Barnstable County’s best public high school offers an International Baccalaureate program
